Prime Minister has proposed Navin Beekarry as Director General of the Financial Crimes Commission for a period of 3 years. A correspondence, containing the wish of Pravind Jugnauth, was sent to the leader of the opposition, Xavier-Luc Duval, yesterday, Tuesday 5 March.
Articles 7(3) and 10(1) of the Financial Crimes Commission Act provide for four commissioners and a director general to be appointed by the President of the Republic, on the advice of the Prime Minister, after consultation with the opposition leader.
The names of the four commissioners have also been submitted namely : Narainkrishna Peerun, former Director General of the National Security Service, Abdool Carrim Namdarkhan, lawyer, Marie Claudine Josiane Lilette Paya, former Acting Deputy Registrar General and Jugdish Dev Phokeer, former Permanent Secretary.
The Financial Crimes Commission is intended to replace the Independent Commission against Corruption (Icac), the Integrity Reporting Services Agency (Irsa) and the Asset Recovery Investigation Division. Navin Beekarry is actually the Director General of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC).
Xavier-Luc Duval maintains that the opposition will categorically oppose this proposed appointment.
