Prime Minister
Republic of Mauritius
My Dear Students,
It is my pleasure to extend my warm greetings to you on our country’s National Day.
Today, as we prepare for this most unifying moment, let us pledge to uphold values such as solidarity, hard work, and social harmony which are at the core of our nation.
I am quite confident that you, the young people of our country, will indeed assume your responsibility as dutiful citizens, and contribute to strengthening our foundations for peace, stability, and prosperity.
The younger generations have a crucial role to play to protect and build upon the legacy left by our ancestors. Our forefathers endured countless sacrifices and hardships which should not go in vain.
I will spare no effort to create a bright future for our young people. But, remember that as the young brains and minds of this country, you are the best resource that can help us reach our goal of prosperity in the coming years.
Unity is the path forward. Let us come together to address the many challenges ahead. Coping with the new normal will require a stronger determination to consolidate the bond between us.
Moreover, greater efforts are needed to navigate through these times of economic instability around the world. You should avail yourselves of all the possible avenues that exist today for developing your skills, interests and talents, thus enhancing your employability.
Our young people are inspired and passionate. I know that many of you burst with creative ideas. Our country needs your entrepreneurial minds more than ever.
In addition to a culture of innovation and an entrepreneurial mindset, you will need to acquire technical skills to be successful in working life. For this reason, Government is investing heavily in training. We are committed to assist you in your efforts to become pioneers in innovative and nascent fields.
Climate change and environmental degradation are issues of major concern to our young people. The voices and activism of youth leaders are making a difference, to the extent that there is now a greater awareness of sustainability issues globally.
In Mauritius, our policies are designed to ensure that economic growth is not achieved at the expense of the environment. I can reassure you that no initiative will ever be taken that may compromise our children’s future.
As we endeavour to create this promising future, we are also making considerable strides towards protecting our territorial integrity. Our nation witnessed a landmark event last month when the Mauritian flag was raised in the Chagos Archipelago which forms an integral part of our territory. This historic moment fills our hearts with great pride.
My Dear Students,
To celebrate National Day is to celebrate nation-building. On this day, let us resolve to join hands to make our country a better, safer, and healthier place for all.
Long live the Republic of Mauritius!
Pravind Kumar Jugnauth
