The National Crisis Committee (NCC), chaired by the Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Local Government and Disaster Risk Management, Dr Mohammad Anwar Husnoo, met, yesterday afternoon, at the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Centre (NDRRMC) in Port Louis, to review preparations for any potential impact as moderate tropical storm Eleanor approaches the region.
The Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the NDRRMC, Mr Premanand Budhoo; the Acting Director of the Mauritius Meteorological Services (MMS), Dr Pritiviraj Booneeady; and representatives of the public and private sectors, were present.
According to the forecast of the MMS, the moderate tropical storm was moving slowly in a general easterly direction and was likely to recurve towards the south, and then towards the south-south-west. On this trajectory, Eleanor would approach the region and would represent a potential threat to Mauritius.
In a statement following the meeting, Mr Budhoo highlighted that the NCC reviewed preparedness measures being implemented in response to the moderate tropical storm Eleanor, as well as additional mitigative measures by stakeholders to address the evolving on-ground situation.
“The National Emergency Operations Command will be activated accordingly whenever a cyclone warning class two is issued or if required,” the Officer-in-Charge pointed out.
“First responders,” he underscored, “are preparing for deployment and remain active on field.” An appeal was thus made to the public to start taking all precautions and to abide by instructions given by the authorities to avoid any incident.
