Mr Edgard Razafindravahy was appointed as the new Secretary-General of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), during an Extraordinary session of the IOC Council of Ministers, held, yesterday.
Mr Edgard Razafindravahy will succeed Professor Vêlayoudom Marimoutou and will assume the duties as the tenth Secretary-General of the IOC.
In a statement, the Attorney General, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Maneesh Gobin, who participated virtually in the Session, underlined that the IOC had always been the cornerstone of solidarity, peace and progress in the region.
“The IOC,” he stated, “illustrates the philosophy of cooperation and partnership that unites our islands and our peoples.” As such, he emphasised that the leadership of the new Secretary-General would be essential in perpetuating these fundamental values and further strengthening the ties uniting the islands.
Minister Gobin also highlighted the contributions of Professor Vêlayoudom Marimoutou, and the various achievements, during his mandate, that enabled the IOC to thrive in its path towards sustainable development.
The Minister was confident that the newly appointed Secretary-General would assume his responsibilities with integrity, diligence and transparency as well as make significant impact in strengthening regional cooperation among Member States.
