Eight injured. This is the toll of an accident that occurred on the Coastal road of Mont Choisy this Monday afternoon, August 8, between a cab and an individual bus. The 31-year-old cab driver was given a breathalyzer test, which came back positive. His 28-year-old wife was seriously injured and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at North Hospital. According to the images of the surveillance cameras of Safe City, the cab emerged abruptly on the Coastal Road while leaving the public beach.
It was around 5:50 pm on Monday, August 8 that this accident occurred. Immediately alerted, elements of the police station of Pointe aux Canonniers went to the scene of the accident. An individual bus of the brand Daewoo and a cab of the brand Toyota of grey color collided, and both vehicles were damaged. There were no injuries on the bus. However, the cab driver, a resident of Circonstance, Saint-Pierre, his 28 year old wife, a couple from Montée S, Petite-Rivière, their 4 year old daughter, four youngsters, aged 10, 15 and 16 respectively were injured.
They were taken to the hospital in a police vehicle, an ambulance from the North Hospital and an ambulance from the Emergency Medical Service (SAMU). The 16-year-old boy was released from the hospital after receiving treatment, while the 4-year-old girl’s condition is considered serious. The other injured were placed in a ward for observation.
Elements of the Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene of the accident to remove the injured from the car. The Northern Divisional Supporting Unit and the Emergency Response Service (ERS) were called in to assist their colleagues at the Pointe aux Canonniers Police Station.
The 34 year old bus driver from St. Croix and the cab driver were given a breathalyzer test by the ERS officers, which was positive for the cab driver. He had 77 micrograms of alcohol in his breath.
The police station of Pointe aux Canonniers has initiated an investigation to know the exact circumstances of this accident.
