The Ministry of Commerce has issued a stern warning against traders who are helping to create an artificial shortage of white rice, also known as ‘riz ration’, on the market. This follows several complaints received about traders storing a volume of long-grain white rice supplied by the State Trading Corporation in warehouses, not making it available to the public. The Ministry of Commerce states that the STC has resumed normal distribution of some 90 metric tonnes per day across the island and Rodrigues for several weeks now. The Ministry reminds traders that, in accordance with article 17 of the law on the control of consumer prices and supplies, they must display a sample of each product offered for sale in the part of their establishment accessible to the public. He added that officers from the Consumer Affairs Unit are keeping a close eye on the situation.
