Tripartite consultations on wage compensation began on Monday. The Labour Minister met with trade unionists, private sector representatives and members of some government departments to decide on the quantum of wage compensation.
Speaking to the press at the end of the meeting, Soodesh Callichurn said that the inflation rate in Mauritius for 2023 was estimated at 7.1%. He pointed out, however, that the minimum wage of Rs 15,000, applicable from January 2024, and the exercise of the day to determine the amount of wage compensation are two “separate” things.
He also informed that as per Statistics Mauritius, the inflation rate forecast for this year stands at 7.1%. This figure, the Minister underlined, is based on the final Consumer Price Index for January to August 2023, and an estimate for October to December 2023.
Furthermore, the Minister averred that a meeting will be held with the Minister of Finance, Economic Planning, and Development, Dr Renganaden Padayachy, on Thursday 07 December 2023 to work out the compensation rate for the year 2024.
