MCB Tour Championship 2022: Thomas Bjorn With Authority!

Must Read

The eleventh edition of the MCB Tour Championship, the flagship tournament of the Legends Tour calendar, was held over the past weekend on the Legends Golf Course, Belle-Mare Plage. This competition, the last of the Legends Tour calendar, saw the coronation of the Danish Thomas Bjorn, who put everyone in agreement by returning a superb card of 20 strokes under par, while claiming the record by achieving a score of 61 Saturday (-11). He received the prestigious trophy from Jean Michel Ng Tseung, Chief Executive (designate), MCB Group.

Mauritius famous for golf

In his speech at the award ceremony, the winner was full of praise for the competition and its organizers. He warmly thanked the MCB for its involvement as title sponsor in the organization of golf competitions of this magnitude, while pointing out that this is how Mauritius has also become a renowned destination for golf. “Mauritius is not only a renowned tourist destination; it has also made a name for itself in golf. Without such sponsors, we would not be here,” he said.

Speaking at the award ceremony, Jean-Michel Ng Tseung, Chief Executive (designate) of MCB Group, praised the winner’s outstanding performance. He also highlighted the close collaboration between the Constance Group and the Legends Tour.

Awards

In addition to Thomas Bjorn, two other golf stars received awards on Sunday. The South African James Kingston, second in Belle-Mare behind Bjorn, with a card of -13, won the John Jacobs Trophy, rewarding the most consistent golfer of the season. Brazilian Adilson Da Silva won the Rookie of the Year award.

During the week of competition, Dominique Provençal, Head of Business Banking and kingpin behind the organization of the MCB Tour Championship, distinguished himself by winning the title of “Best Mauritian Amateur” at the Alliance Pro-Am. This competition is interesting in many ways for amateurs, as it offers a unique opportunity for amateur golfers to compete with the legends.

A Social Scope

Not to be outdone by previous editions, the MCB Group also wanted to give a social dimension to golf. The Group will contribute Rs 579,000 to the Chrysalis Association, i.e. Rs 1,000 for each of the 579 birdies made during the competition. The association operates a shelter for women victims of domestic violence, drug addicts and their children.

Golf clinic

Also as part of the MCB Tour Championship, 19 young members of the Mauritius Golf Federation (MGF) participated in a golf clinic given by four of the pros, namely Michael Campbell, James Kingston, Joakim Haeggman and Paul McGinley. The aim of this golf clinic, which is part of a partnership with the MGF, was to encourage the juniors to improve in their favorite sport, based on the advice of the pros.
