The British High Commission Mauritius and the Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change are delighted to announce that Mauritius has joined the Taskforce on Access to Climate Finance as a pioneer country, trialling a new approach to support for Mauritius’s climate action plan and priorities.
The UK is proud to support the Mauritian Government in delivering its national climate objectives. The Taskforce on Access to Climate Finance, which the UK co-chairs with Fiji, helps address climate vulnerable countries’ concerns about the speed, complexity, and scale of current climate finance mechanisms. At COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Mauritius announced that it will join the Taskforce’s group of pioneer countries, working with the UK and other partners to test a new approach to climate finance that should deliver more coherent, predictable, and programmatic finance for its national climate priorities.
‘Mauritius’s confirmation that it will join the Taskforce on Access to Climate Finance as a pioneer country is an exciting opportunity to deliver more finance and expertise for Mauritius’s own national climate priorities, and to help develop a new approach that will benefit other Small Island Developing States. The UK relishes the opportunity to work with Mauritius as the lead partner for this initiative, further strengthening our climate partnership.’ said the British High Commissioner to Mauritius, H.E. Charlotte Pierre.
‘The financial needs for implementing the Mauritius NDC measures for the period 2021-2030 are estimated at USD 6.5 billion, of which USD 4.2 billion (65%) would need to be secured from the international communities and donor agencies. Trialing this new approach under the Taskforce will enable transformation at systemic level and promote a programmatic process to promote access to longer-term and predictable funding. Climate actions need to be mainstreamed into development and investment strategies and budgeting/fiscal frameworks.’ said the Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Honourable Kavydass Ramano.
