Malawi: Vice President Saulos Chilima Dies Along With Nine Others In A Plane Crash

Must Read

In an unfortunate incident, Vice President of Malawi Saulos Chilima died along with nine other people in an aircraft crash. The news was shared by the president’s secretary of Malawi, Colleen Samba, on Tuesday (June 11).

Earlier, a large search operation was initiated in hilly jungles in northern Malawi after the plane carrying Vice President Saulos Chilima and nine other people went missing on Monday (June 10). After a protracted search, the missing aircraft was discovered in Chikangawa Forest, with all of its occupants dead.

A formal statement describing the accident was released by the Office of the President and Cabinet.

Eight other people, apart from former first lady Shanil Dzimbiri and the vice president, boarded the jet that was leaving the capital. However, because of the terrible weather and low visibility, Mzuzu air traffic control advised the pilots to turn around instead of attempting to land. But shortly after losing communication with the aircraft, air traffic control removed it from the radar.

Since 2014, Saulos Chilima has served as vice president. According to his profile on the official website, he previously served as the leader of the mobile network Airtel Malawi and held positions at Unilever, Coca-Cola, and Carlsberg.
