This is one of the main conclusions of a study conducted by NGO Gender Links in collaboration with the European Union. The main political parties fielded 20% women for the National Elections in 2019. Moreover, women represent 20% of members in Parliament, 24% in local government and 13% in Cabinet. This is to say that we have only 3 female ministers. Moreover, except the MMM, the other traditional political parties have aligned between 11 and 25% of women in 2019.
It is Lalit, a left-wing movement, who fielded the highest number of women in the last general elections (40%). MSM, Labour and PMSD fielded between 11 and 25% women candidates. The MMM did better. At least 26% of its candidates were women.
The objective of the study was to assess the participation and representation of women in politics in Mauritius. Representatives from 11 different political parties responded to the questionnaire.
