The Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Jugnauth, has officially launched the new MBC television and radio package in Rodrigues. The launch took place on Monday 29th August 2022 at the National Broadcasting Corporation’s headquarters in Citronnelle in the presence of the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Dr Renganaden Padayachy.
This package includes twelve television channels and four radio channels. This development was made possible by the installation of DVBT 2 technology which required an investment of Rs 43 million.
In his speech, the Prime Minister spoke of a turning point in the audiovisual landscape in Rodrigues. The island previously had only four TV channels and two radio channels (2014).
Mr. Pravind Jugnauth also explained that this migration to DVBT 2 technology is taking place thanks to the island’s internet connectivity. The Head of Government recalled that it was in 2019 that Rodrigues was connected to the MARS submarine fibre optic cable, thus enabling the inhabitants to have access to high-speed internet.
The Prime Minister also congratulated the MBC which will offer in its new package a radio channel and a TV channel, namely Rodrigues FM and Rodrigues TV, with programmes exclusively from Rodrigues.
The Prime Minister also launched a radio programme of the Citizen Support Unit in Rodrigues. He participated in the inaugural programme on Rodrigues FM alongside the Chief Commissioner.
Mr Pravind Jugnauth explained that the idea behind the launch of the CSU platform was to break down all barriers between the citizen and government services. The Head of Government said that this objective has been achieved. He revealed that the CSU digital portal has received some 250,000 complaints in Mauritius and that to date, 91% of them have been resolved.
The Prime Minister also encouraged citizens to take advantage of this platform to make suggestions for improving public services.
