Know How Twitter’s ‘Edit Button’ Works And What’s More For Twitterati

Must Read

Twitter has been making people aware of its edit button for some time now. The microblogging company demonstrated how the new edit feature works by editing its tweet.

Earlier in September, Twitter showed an edited tweet and explained what Edit Tweet is.

Twitter edited its tweet, which showed ‘Last Edited’ at the bottom of the posted tweet. On clicking the Last Edit link, users can see the edits made in the tweet. The original tweet and the edited one will have the same ID, except the ID of the original tweet will show a different URL with “/history”.

Jane Manchun, an app researcher and reverse engineer, mentioned in her report that “instead of mutating the Tweet text within the same Tweet (same ID), it re-creates a new Tweet with the amended content, along with the list of the old Tweets before that edit.” The new feature syncs with Machun’s report.

What’s in and what’s not in Twitter Blue

The ‘Edit Button’ feature would help users make amends. Users can correct typos, add missed tags, and more. However, the feature comes with a few conditions. Users will be able to edit the tweets a few times within 30 minutes of publishing. Twitter claims that it will closely examine how the feature will impact the way people read, write, and engage with tweets.

But there is no way that a user would alter or change a tweet and not have a trace of their original tweet. “Tweets will appear with an icon, timestamp, and label, so it’s clear to readers that the original Tweet has been modified. Tapping the label will take viewers to the Tweet’s Edit History, which includes past versions of the Tweet. For context, the time limit and version history play an important role here. They help protect the integrity of the conversation and create a publicly accessible record of what was said,” Twitter said.

The ‘Twitter Edit Button’ feature will come with charges. This means that only Twitter Blue subscribers will have access to the feature. Twitter Blue is an opt-in with a paid monthly subscription that provides exclusive access to premium features such as the undo tweet. It was launched in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The Twitter Blue feature is not available in Mauritius, so, users there will not have access to the ‘Edit Button’.
