A 100% Mauritian podium in the men’s 100m, a Mauritian double in the women’s 10,000m. Never before has Mauritius achieved such a series of performances in athletics. Mauritian power was confirmed by Bernard Baptiste in the shot put.
Three gold medals in athletics on the first day of competition. The favourites merely confirmed their status. Like the confidence with which Marie Perrier distinguished herself in the women’s 10,000m. Ditto for Noa Bibi, who won the men’s 100m, dominating his compatriot Jonathan Bardottier, who won gold in 2019 over the queen distance. But the surprise on the podium came from Orphée Topize who made her way onto the podium.
As for Bernard Baptiste, he was out of reach of his rivals with a winning throw measured at 18m25 i.e. just 10 centimetres off his own national record.
