The Mauritian delegation, with its flag bearer, artist Mathieu Joseph, marched last night during the ceremony of the 9th Games of La Francophonie at the Martyrs Stadium in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The ceremony was attended by the President of the DRC, Felix Tshisekedi, and no fewer than eighty thousand spectators – the maximum capacity of the Martyrs stadium – cheered on the 3,000 artists and sportsmen and women from some thirty participating countries.
The Francophonie Games, comprising nine sporting and eleven cultural competitions, will run until 6 August.
Freestyle wrestling: Guyliane Bandou and Naldo Prosper battle for bronze
Mauritius could pick up its first medal in Kinshasa this Saturday evening. Wrestlers Guyliane Bandou (61 kg) and Naldo Prosper (65 kg) have qualified for the bronze medal match. Naldo Prosper will face Congo’s Raby Bapelekia, while Guyliane Bandou will be up against Cameroon’s Samuel Dohya Cale.
