In the southeast Iranian province of Sistan-Baluchestan, an agent of Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency was put to death on Saturday, according to the official IRNA news agency.
“This person communicated with foreign services, specifically Mossad, collecting classified information, and with participation with associates, provided documents to foreign services, including the Mossad,” said the statement.
It didn’t give the person’s name.
The accused was charged with providing “propaganda for groups and organisations opposed to the Islamic Republic” after allegedly giving a “Mossad officer” access to classified material. The location of the purported handover was not specified.
One day after Baluch militants attacked a police station in the province, killing eleven security personnel and injuring several more, the execution took place in a Zahedan jail in Sistan-Baluchestan. According to state television, a state funeral for the men who were attacked in the town of Rask was held on Saturday. In the ensuing fighting, two Jaish al-Adl militants also perished.
Conflicts between security forces and Sunni militants have long been common in the impoverished Sistan-Baluchestan province, which borders both Pakistan and Afghanistan. While Shi’ites make up the majority of Iranians, Sunnis make up the majority of the province’s population.
