GOPIO International organised International Yoga Day at Universal College – Rivière du Rempart today. Some 40 students of Universal and Ideal Colleges participated along with some members of their staff.
Dr Goodoye, yoga expert from the Ministry of Health and Wellness conducted the demo. The students were enthusiastic and performed all the postures with much vigour.
Hon. R. Daliah PPS, Mookhesswur Choonee – President of GOPIO International, D. Utchanah V. President, B. Dinand Secretary, Mr & Mrs Bhowan, respectively Manager and Rector of Universal College and representatives of Ideal college attended and participated.
In his speech Mr. Daliah said that he performs yoga from a very young age and that kept him fit and strong both physically and mentally. He requested the students to do same for them to succeed in life.
On the other hand Mr. Choonee traced the history of Yoga and mentioned that it started well before any religion or belief system was born. It is meant for humanity at large now that UN has given it an international status. He also proposed that yoga should be taught as from the concrete operative stage ( 7 to 11 years of age) where children start doing things in a practical manner, ie from primary schooling and then proceed up to the age of 16, secondary schooling. This will help them have a holistic health both physical and mental.
Mr. Dinand presided over the meeting and Mrs. Bhowon gave the vote of thanks. After the demo by Dr. Goodoye everyone enjoyed a vegetarian lunch.
