A march by students displaying designed messages aiming at sensitising their peers against drug abuse and illicit trafficking was organised, today, in the premises of three different schools namely: Quartier Militaire State Secondary School (Girls); Rajcoomar Gujadhur Government School; and Rajcoomar Gujadhur State Secondary School.
This initiative results from a proposal from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology to organise a series of activities in primary and secondary schools in the context of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, annually observed on 26 June. The theme for this year is “Addressing drug challenges in health and humanitarian crises”.
Amongst other activities to be organised by Heads of Schools in order to sensitise students towards a drug-free and healthy lifestyle comprise: the holding of awareness sessions by Educators of the Physical Education Department and by HEP Educators; and the holding of talks, debates, brainstorming sessions by Educators (irrespective of subject area).
It is recalled that, prior to the aforementioned activities, a drawing/painting competition for primary and secondary schools was organised by the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology. A total of 144 entries from the primary level and 50 entries from the secondary level were received and following an evaluation exercise, three best entries for each category were selected. The results and the selected artworks were submitted to the PMO and are expected to be announced soon.
