Twenty bulbs of pethidine intended for injections have disappeared from ward 1-5 of the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National Hospital (SSRN) in Pamplemousses. Yesterday, a ward manager lodged a complaint with the SSRN hospital police station. She said she suspected a nurse at the hospital. She added that she was on leave on January 7 but learned from a colleague that there was an issue with the bulbs of pethidine recorded in the Dangerous Drugs Book. On Monday, she checked the book and noticed two incorrect entries and an error in the number of ampoules used. According to her, ten doses of 100 mg and ten doses of 50 mg of pethidine had disappeared. She immediately alerted the hospital manager before reporting the matter to the police. Pethidine is a synthetic opioid analgesic used to relieve moderate to severe pain associated with childbirth, surgery or other painful conditions. Its use is sometimes restricted due to the possibility of dependence and adverse effects.
