The Grandhi Mallikarjuna Rao (GMR) Group, which operates India’s Delhi airport, has announced that the airport will now support a 5G network. This would give passengers access to 5G connectivity soon after the services become available from the Telecom Service Providers (TSPs).
Currently, most airports offer wireless service to passengers via Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi relies on the unlicensed spectrum, which is free for anyone to use. Passengers would be able to quickly download files, videos, and more, along with zero buffering during streaming and seamless execution of resource-intensive applications.
Those with mobile phone sets and SIM cards that are 5G-enabled can experience better signal strength, seamless connectivity, and faster data speed at the domestic departure pier and international arrival baggage area at Terminal 3, and between T3 arrivals and multi-level car parking (MLCP), Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) stated.
The GMR stated that the deployment of the 5G network would be done in stages. Presently, only a few TSPs have enabled their network with 5G service for their customers, and other network providers are expected to come out with such a service in the next few weeks.
Additionally, it is anticipated that the airports’ current applications, such as passenger processing, baggage management, and airport operations, will be improved by the 5G network. “Lower latency and quicker speeds are available on the 5G network. “This aspect of the newest mobile technology will increase connection density at the airport, as well as productivity and efficiency, and speed up decision-making,” said DIAL’s CEO, Videh Kumar Jaipuriar.
