The Mauritius Turf Club and its subsidiary MTC Sports and Leisure Ltd are forced to cancel one day of racing this weekend, due to lack of horses for the 16 races scheduled. As a result, the MTCSL will organize a day of 7 races this Saturday, August 20th.
This does not help the MTCSL which is facing financial problems with a debt of around Rs 120 million.
According to our information, 9 trainers have decided not to put any starters for this day. Hence the lack of horses for the races.
The situation of the MTCSL is even more complicated as the betting rate has drastically decreased compared to the previous seasons. In addition, the race organizer has to share the season with a second company.
With just a few days to go before the MTC’s Special General Meeting on August 24, the shadow of bankruptcy is once again hanging over the MTCSL.
The members will have to decide whether to approve the sale of the land belonging to the MTC in Floréal, valued at Rs 259 million, to pay off the MTCSL’s debts.
