6th meeting – The Gunness Gujadhur Cup – 1450m – B66
Trainer Ramapatee Gujadhur will try to win his uncle’s named trophy. He will count one of his best horses, Marauding, to do the job. But it might be a tough task against top competitors Dynamite Jack, Tower Of Wisdom and Ideal Secret also in the race. We have to go as far back as 2013 for a winner of the Guajdhur stable in the Gunness Gujadhur Cup. It was Azapel ridden by late Mauritian jockey Nooresh Juglall. And, on this 20th of July 2013, this yard had another runner, Eskimo Roll, who finished third with To Mauritian jockey Karis Teetan on board. A win after so many years in this race will bring his share of joy to the Gujadhur family.
Trainer Ramapatee Gujadhur seemed to have targeted this race for the first outing of Marauding in 2021. He is a very tough horse to train in the morning. But once he switched on he becomes a machine. Marauding won seven out of his nine races in Mauritius. He started at the Champ-de-mars at 3 years. He blossomed last year with five wins, and he stopped the clock at 1 minute 26.85 seconds on the 10th of October, which is the track record for the 1450m.
Marauding has done brilliantly at track work and he won his barrier trial easily on the 9th of June. He will be a hard nut to crack.
The Cup might fall in the hands of another Gujadhur, with Rameshwar Gujadhur’s horse Dynamite Jack being the race favourite at the bookies. Dynamite Jack won easily his last three races in lower classes. He is having a go against much better competitors and he will try to make the most of the weight difference (-4.5 Kg compared to Marauding) to win a four in a row.
Ideal Secret went close to beat one of the best horse racing in Mauritius when he finished third and close, 0.15 lengths, behind Alyaasaat. He is in great form, but his bad draw at the gate might be a big disadvantage. However, he can still win if he gets a good position during the first half of the race.
