A few hours after his release from the New Wing of the Beau-Bassin Central Prison, Denis Christopher Bazerque, 38 years old, was found dead at his home on Abercrombie Avenue, St. Croix on the afternoon of Monday, February 27. He had just served three months in prison for a theft case. An autopsy performed at the morgue of the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis in the evening attributed his death to acute cerebral edema, probably caused by an overdose.
It was following a request made to the Abercrombie Police Station, St. Croix that a team of police officers, led by Sergeant Auckburally-Serally, went to the address indicated at approximately 1:15 p.m. on Monday, February 27. These officers found a man, lifeless, lying on the ground on his back.
A release form from the New Wing prison in Beau-Bassin was found in his possession. According to this document, he left the prison on Monday morning, February 27. The body of Christopher Bazerque was subsequently transported to the morgue of the Dr. Jeetoo Hospital for an autopsy. The autopsy, performed by Dr. Ananda Sunnassee, Police Medical Officer in the evening, attributed his death to acute cerebral edema, probably caused by an overdose. Samples were taken from the victim during the autopsy for analysis at the Forensic Science Laboratory in Reduit.
An investigation has been initiated at the Abercrombie Police Station to determine the exact circumstances of the death.
