Antoine David, 58 years old, the maternal grandfather of Louis Ellakim Loïc Azael Fanfan, 4 years old, who died of an overdose in the early morning hours of Friday, October 14, was arrested this Saturday morning, October 15. He was brought before the Bail and Remand Court (BRC) in Port-Louis the same day, on a provisional charge of manslaughter.
The arrest of Antoine David was made by the men of Inspector Ashvin Lullith of the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of the Metropolitan Police of the Northern Division. This suspect is held responsible for the death of his grandson for having brought home a bottle of methadone. This drug was supposed to be consumed at the place of distribution. His grandson Ellakim accidentally swallowed the contents which were in a room at his home. The child was taken to the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital in Port-Louis by his father Jacques Ellakim in the early evening of Thursday, October 13. Admitted to the ward, he unfortunately succumbed at around 4 am on Friday, October 14.
An autopsy performed on his body at the Dr. Jeetoo Hospital morgue by Dr. Prem Chamane, Principal Police Medical Officer, attributed his death to acute pulmonary edema, probably caused by an overdose. Samples were taken and sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory in Reduit.
