Jean Hubert Célerine is challenging the magistrate-Shavina Jugnauth’s decision to extradite him to Reunion Island. The case was called on Monday, 5 th January before the Chief Justice. Principal State Attorney Doorgesh Kumar Manikaran inform Chief Justice Rehana Mungly-Gulbul that he would be submitting an affidavit in response to Franklin’s affidavit. The Chief Justice then adjourned the case to February 19. On the 12th of January 2024, the Port Louis court acceded to the Attorney General’s request to extradite Franklin. This followed a request made through diplomatic channels by the French authorities after a judgment in absentia handed down by the Saint-Denis Criminal Court on the 2nd July 2021. Franklin was sentenced to 7 years prison for drug offences.
