The former President of the Republic of Mauritius, late Mr Karl Auguste Offmann, GCSK, has received a national funeral and his funeral service was held, today, at the Sacré Cœur Church, in Beau-Bassin.
The President of the Republic, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun; the Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth; the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr Sooroojdev Phokeer; several political figures and personalities attended the funeral service and paid their last respects to Mr Offmann.
The sanitary protocol of the COVID-19 of 50 persons was maintained during the funeral service which was officiated by Cardinal Piat and Father Veder.
The Mauritian national flag is being flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset today as a sign of the country’s mourning.
Mr Karl Auguste Offmann, who was President of the Republic of Mauritius from 23 February 2002 to 01 October 2003, died of illness on Saturday 12 March 2022 at the age of 81. He was cremated at Chebel.
