At 3 pm this Saturday, July 2, the fire at the LUX*Belle-Mare hotel was largely under control according to Mr. Dorsamy Ayacouty, Chief Fire Officer. He said that his team is currently working on the debris.
The LUX Belle Mare hotel issued a statement to say that there were no injuries during the fire that broke out in the hotel. Once the alert was given, the firemen of Flacq, were quickly dispatched on the scene and the totality of the customers was evacuated.
The damage caused by the disaster was estimated to be very significant. More than 70 rooms of the hotel were affected by the flames while a bar and a kitchen were almost destroyed. However, no injuries were reported. Guests left the hotel completely, panicking as the safety of its guests and staff was the priority of the management.
The flames ravaged a large part of the establishment. And that’s why reinforcements were requested, because the strong coastal breezes complicated the task of the firemen. It must be said that fire and rescue workers were quickly dispatched to the scene.
The SMF Disaster Response Unit is continuing a room-by-room search to ensure that everyone is accounted for. As a precautionary measure, SMF is conducting a “search and rescue” exercise. This work will take time. Now a police investigation begins into the cause of a blaze. According to a release from the Ministry of Local Government and Disaster and Risk Management, the National Emergency Operations Committee of the National Center for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management is closely monitoring the situation with all relevant stakeholders.
