A strong message from Father Alain Romaine in his homily at the traditional mass to mark the feast of St. Louis. It was last Thursday, 25 August, in the Cathedral of Saint-Louis. The theme chosen for this year’s mass was “300 years with the Mauritian people”. It was also an occasion to mark the tercentenary of the Catholic Church in Mauritius.
Alain Romaine paid tribute to some of the great Mauritian figures of the Church, who have contributed to the building of a single people, a single nation united by peace, justice and freedom under our quadricolour.
Father Alain Romaine referred to the Lazarist missionary, Father Gabriel Igou. He arrived in 1722 and is considered the founder of the Church on the Isle of France. He also mentioned Father Laval and Bishop Amédée Nagapen.
Present at the religious ceremony were the Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth and some ministers, the President of the Republic Prithviraj Roopun as well as other political personalities.
