On this Tuesday 3rd May 2022, the Muslim community of Mauritius and around the world is celebrating Eid-Ul-Fitr after having observed the Ramdan Kareem (fasting) for 30 days in prayers, spirituality, sharing, and helping those who are in need. It is after two long years that Eid is being celebrated at national level at the Sunni Razvi Society this year with all sanitary precautions observed.
It was the Prime Minister, Pravind Kumar Jugnauth along with the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Prithvirajsing Roopun, the Leader of the Opposition, Xavier Luc Duval and other representatives of the Government, the core diplomatic and religious heads like Cardinal Maurice Piat, among others, who made the honours at the celebrations this morning.

He also spoke about the sacrifices we made during these difficult moments and the responsible way Mauritians reacted in solidarity at that time. Pravind Jugnauth, citing us as an example to the world, said that he is happy to see the huge majority of the Mauritian community practising our religions freely in mutual respect, which obviously create a harmony in the population which should be preserved. Still during his speech, the Prime Minister came over the fact that being a multi religious country, we are exposed to the teachings of all religious book preaching values, solidarity, mutual aid and most importantly, religion puts every believer on the right path making us a better human being. He also came over the Covid situation and the Ukraine war influencing the whole world economy.
The President of the Republic, on his behalf, stated that he was proud to participate to the Eid-Ul-Fitr celebration for the very first time as the Head of the State. During his speech, he came over the very first Eid celebration at national level in 1982, which was organised by Sunni Razvi Society. According to him, it is by the initiatives taken by the society 40 years ago that Eid-Ul-Fitr has been celebrated at national level along with the governors of the country. He also stated that it is the spirit of sharing existing in our country that makes its beauty.
During his speech, the Leader of the Opposition, Xavier Luc Duval stated that the month of Ramadan has come to its end with the celebration of Eid-Ul-Fitr. During this month, we learnt how to resist to different temptations; how to discipline ourselves, how to develop self-control and all this is a test for our interior forces but Ramadan is also a month of sacrifices and charity through the Zakat, which demonstrate our love for each other. Coming over the Pandemic and the Ukraine war situation, the Leader of the Opposition said that we have to ensure that our economy and our society are strong enough to face the difficulties coming towards us; not forgetting the climate change with natural calamities. He has appealed to our decision makers to really take decisions, bring measures that will protect the society and those facing poverty today.
