Despite having thousands of downloads, these apps are not at all safe for your data. McAfee has advised that users check extensions completely before they go ahead and install them. As some might pose a risk to your device, do check requested permissions. Do not ever install extensions from outside Google Extensions store ever! Although thse apps are found on the Google store, the company maintains a security measure which prevents you from installing highly malicious extensions. These extensions can do much more harm to your device than just steal data.
