The MMM leadership held a press conference on Sarurdays morning. Paul Bérenger addressed a series of issues, namely, the health situation where he stated that the “government has lost control“. He maintains that the worst thing there can be is a “crisis of confidence“. According to him, when you look at the number of cases, hospitalizations and deaths, you see that the “government has lost control“. He also argued that there have been directives to reduce the number of tests because of its costs.
Paul Bérenger also accused the finance minister of misleading the population about the inflation rate and the foreign currency reserves situation. For him, the level of foreign exchange has decreased by US$500 million from January to July 2021. The situation has been mitigated, according to him, thanks to the funds obtained from Japan and the loans contracted by the Bank of Mauritius.
For Paul Bérenger, this operation aims to “camouflage the increase in debt” but also to allow the government to reap billions of rupees through VAT.
