On January 21, 2023, a clean-up and awareness-raising campaign was organized in flood-prone sections of the Plaine Magnien region, in the presence of Mr. Bobby Hurreeram, Minister of National Infrastructure and Community Development, in attendance. Additionally, there were other notable individuals and important players, including Mr. Jean Christophe Stephan Toussaint, Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports, and Recreation.
The installation of new drains, clearing of existing ones, and dredging and cleaning of rivers were among the activities that the responsible authorities were able to assess at this time, Minister Hurreeram said. He noted that it was also an opportunity to evaluate the effects of the recent high rainfall in the area, evaluate the effectiveness of the current infrastructure, and develop solutions for clogged drains and flooding problems in the area.
However, the Minister regretted that some individuals continued to act irresponsibly by disposing of trash in rivers and drains, such as old mattresses, washing machines, and refrigerators. He thus took advantage of the occasion to exhort the populace to act more responsibly and work with the authorities to maintain the cleanliness of rivers and drains as well as the environment at large.
