A plaint with Summons on behalf of 1,762 residents and socio-economic operators from 32 regions in the South-East was served on Okiyo Maritime Corp, Nagashaki Shipping Co Ltd, Mitsui O.S.K Lines Ltd and the Japan Ship Owners’ Mutual Protection & Indemnity Association
This legal action occurred more than three years after the sinking of the Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier MV Wakashio off Pointe-d’Esny, in the south-east of the island, on 25 July 2020, with the oil spill in early August of the same year.
The legal battle for damages and compensation for the inhabitants and socio-economic operators of this part of the country, affected by the oil spill, is still on. The plaint with summons was served earlier this week on behalf of 1,762 individuals claiming some Rs 5,307,000,000, or Rs 3 million each, from the shipowners, the latter being held responsible for the illegal acts and actions of the crew that caused the oil and hydrocarbon spill damaging the south-east coast.
