Mr Dewodhat Jugdharry, born on 25 December 1921, has today joined the elite group of centenarians of Mauritius. Mr Jugdharry celebrated his birthday, this evening, in presence of his wife and family members, at the Palms Hotel, in Quatre Bornes.
He received from the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity a cheque amounting to Rs 21,836, a flower bouquet, a centenarian medal along with a certificate and a blender. A present was offered by the Senior Citizens Council as well as a cash gift of Rs 10,000 by the National Solidarity Fund. A mobile phone was also offered to him by the Mauritius Telecom.
Mr Dewodhat Jugdharry was born in Port Louis. His father was a ‘Courtier’ and passed away at the age of 99 years, and his mother, Mrs Somaria Jugdharry, who was a housewife, was also a centenarian. Mr Jugdharry had one brother and four sisters. Only one sister, residing in France, is still alive.
Mr Jugdharry attended school up to 6th standard and was a famous tailor known as Lalah Tailleur. He will celebrate his 70th wedding anniversary, this December. He has five children and nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
It is recalled that Mauritius counts a total of 160 centenarians, namely 25 men and 135 women, while Rodrigues has a total of 11 centenarians, including nine women and two men, as at 23 December 2021.
