On this occasion, Ms Noemi Alphonse, who is the current World Champion of the 100 metres and Vice-World Champion of the 400 metres in the T54 category, and Ms Anaïs Angeline who is currently the Vice-World Champion of the Long Jump in the T37 category, also received, from the Prime Minister, cheques amounting to Rs 2.5 million and Rs 1 million, respectively.

The Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation, Mr Jean Christophe Stephan Toussaint, and other personalities were also present on this occasion.

In his address, Prime Minister Jugnauth commended the Mauritian delegation for their participation in these games and for making our Nation proud. The Prime Minister seized the opportunity to congratulate the para-athletes’ coaches and family members for their continuous encouragement and support. He reminded the importance of practicing sports and physical activities regularly, which might be a stepping stone for high-level performances in the future. This Government’s policy, he added, will moreover contribute in discovering talents at a very young age and mentor them so that they can later shine at national and international levels.

Noemi Alphonse confirmed her place among the world’s elite with a silver medal this Thursday in the 400m T54 final in Kobe, Japan. In 2023, at the Paris World Championships, she won bronze over the same distance.

“I just missed out on the gold medal. With four finals and a total of seven races in these championships, I got tired. I have to say I’m not in great shape right now as we’re preparing for the Paris 2024 Paralympics. Thanks to those who supported us for these Worlds,” she said.

The Mauritian thus wins her second medal of the World Championships, following her world championship title in the 100m T54 yesterday.

Mauritius now has three medals from these World Championships, following the silver medal won by Anaïs Angéline in the T37 long jump.

Noemi Alphonse has become the first Mauritian to win a world champion title in para-athletics. She won the 100m T54 final in 16.23 seconds yesterday in Kobe, Japan, at the para-athletics world championships. This was Maurice’s second medal of the World Championships, following the silver medal won by Anaïs Angéline in the T37 long jump with a leap of 4.50m.

World runner-up in July 2023 in the T54 100m, Noemie Alphonse took gold this time. With a fiery start, she took the lead after just ten meters to cruise to the world championship title. “I had a revenge to take after my silver medal last year and especially before the Paralympics. I’ve worked for nine years to get to this point. I’d like to thank my parents, my coach and, above all, everyone who supported me in this project. I dedicate my victory to Mauritius”, she said.

Few starters once again for the main race this Saturday with only five runners. Quatro Five Six and Trip To The Sky are the two horses to beat as they have won in their last outings of 2023.

Quatro Five Six did well in 2023 with two wins and two second places. He will be very difficult to beat if we let him run free at the front. He had a good gallop alongside Global Glory on Tuesday. He can win from pillar to post.

Trip To The Sky won easily on the 45th meeting last year. He finished strongly beating Swagger Jagger by 3.05L. He is a good finisher who was carefully trained at Petit Gamin training centre. He will be to be feared in the final straight.

Master Of Illusion did not win in 2023, but he finished many times in the money. He is also a front runner. He can try from start to finish, but he will have to be faster than Quatro Five Six at the start.

Captain Seager won over 1400 and 1600m in South Africa. He did well at training and he can start with a good performance in Mauritius.

Western Fort is a 7-year-old gelding by Elusive Fort and Westerns. He ran against very good horses in South Africa. He won over 1900m and 2000m. He can upset the odds.

World Football Day will now be observed on May 25 every year. This comes after a resolution passed by the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, May 7, allowing football supporters to commemorate the world’s most popular sport.

The resolution states that the day commemorates the 100th anniversary of the first-ever international soccer competition featuring participation from every region, which happened on May 25, 1924, during the summer Olympic games held in Paris.

With a bang of Dennis Francis’s gavel, the 193-member General Assembly passed the resolution by consensus, much to the delight of the assembled diplomats. Over 160 countries sponsored it in tandem.

The resolution’s presenter, Libya’s UN ambassador Taher El-Sonni, informed the assembly that “football, or soccer as some refer to it, is the number one game played and followed around the globe.” But he emphasized that soccer is more than just a game that people of all ages play for fun and in tournaments on the streets, in towns, in schools, and in courtyards. As a result of its “unparalleled position” in the sports world, El-Sonni stated that “Football, or soccer as others call it is the number one game played and followed around the globe.”

The resolution recognizes “the global reach of football and its impact in various spheres, including commerce, peace and diplomacy, and recognizing that football creates a space for cooperation.”

A duel is expected between Juniper Lane and Stageworld in the main race of the first meeting of the 2024 horse racing season which will be held on Saturday May 4 at the Champ-de-Mars racecourse in Port-Louis.

The main attraction to kick off the season will be a 1365m sprint for runners of Benchmark 56. The race attracted just six starters with Juniper Lane and Stageworld standing out.

Given the form he has shown in training in recent weeks, Juniper Lane is the favorite for this race. But he will have to be wary of Stageworld which is on a series of four consecutive wins bagged at the end of the 2023 season.

Juniper Lane does very well after a long rest. He had, moreover, won his first two races over 1365m from start to finish last year. He then bled in his third outing and was disappointing in his other races.

Juniper Lane caught the eye with nice gallops recently. This powerful front runner had a lucky hand when drawing the lines, and he will start from the first lane. He will be hard to beat if he leads the race without being challenged.

Stageworld was back to his best at the end of last season. He has won his last four races. He is moving up in category, but he remains a very valuable runner if he manages to reproduce what he did during his last outings.

Prospector will have a small chance of being an outsider. He won once over 1850m last year. This is his only win during his two seasons in Mauritius. The trip seems too short for him, but he can slip into the good combinations.

The Contractor started his Mauritian career well by taking a good third place, but he was never able to confirm. We will have to count on him if his trainer has found a solution to his health problems. It is certainly worth more than this category on its South African value.

Secret Circle tested positive for Stanozolol

The Horse Racing Division informs the public that following tests carried out on Thursday, April 25 at the Petit Gamin Center, in Balaclava, and at the Champ de Mars, in Port-Louis, the sample of a horse, Secret Circle, from trainer Yashin Emamdee, was tested positive for an illicit product, namely Stanozolol.

The result was communicated by the QuantiLAB laboratory to the HRD late Tuesday afternoon, who then summoned trainer Yashin Emamdee Thursday morning, May 2, 2024 – Wednesday May 1 being a public holiday – to inform him of this result and their rights.

Secret Circle, which featured in the Day 1 entries, was immediately removed by the HRD Stipendiary Stewards at the time of the ‘Declarations’ on Thursday morning.

There was a general inspection of the Yashin Emamdee Yard in Petit Gamin by HRD officials on Thursday morning, and all his horses were tested, and the samples sent to the QuantiLAB laboratory.

According to the provisions of the Rules Of Racing, Yashin Emamdee has the option of having the B sample of the Secret Circle Horse analyzed at his expense in an approved laboratory abroad.

Following the report from the QuantiLAB laboratory, the Cheval Secret Circle was suspended with immediate effect, and an inquiry was opened by the Stipendiary Stewards of the HRD.

Adidas has prohibited football fans from purchasing German football uniforms featuring the number 44, following criticism from the media on their similarity to the mark adopted by Nazi SS soldiers during World War II.

The majority of the Nazis’ crimes against humanity were carried out by SS forces. The decision to utilize pink as the away color for the recently unveiled kit has also sparked debate.

“We will block personalization of the jerseys,” an Adidas representative declared.

Historian Michael König was the first to bring out the symbolic issue, stating that the kits’ design was “very questionable”.

In 1929, the SS rune was created specifically for use by Nazi forces. The SS included both Gestapo agents and guards for concentration camps. Managing the death camps where millions of Jews and other people were executed was one of the SS’s responsibilities.

Oliver Brüggen, a representative for Adidas, refuted claims that the uniform intentionally bore similarities to Nazi insignia. Adidas informed the BBC separately that the numbers on the shirts were created in collaboration with the German Football Association (DFB) and its partners.

The DFB stated in a tweet on Twitter/X that “none of the parties involved saw any proximity to Nazi symbolism” and that the shirt designs had been submitted to UEFA for assessment during the design process. They also mentioned that a different design would be created for the number 4.

The away color of the same uniform, bright pink, has caused more controversy. Some argue that it is unconventional and was just implemented to generate funds for the DFB.

The draw was carried out on Sunday, March 17, after the match between Manchester United and Liverpool. : Coventry City will meet Manchester United and Manchester City will play again Chelsea. The 2023/24 FA Cup semifinals will each be played at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21.

Manchester United saw off Liverpool (4-3 a.e.t.) in the final quarter-final of the FA Cup yesterday after a delirious match in which both teams fired 53 shots, 22 of them on target. Trailing after a goal by McTominay (10th), the Reds turned Old Trafford around thanks to Mac Allister (44th) and Salah (45th+2). After equalising through Antony (87th) to take the tie into extra time, the Red Devils were stunned again by Elliott (105th), only to come back once more through Rashford (112th), before claiming a stunning victory on a lightning counter-attack finished off by Diallo (120th+1).

The Mancunians thus join Manchester City, Chelsea and Coventry in the last four.

Manchester City and Coventry City plotted contrasting paths into the FA Cup semifinals on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola’s side brushed aside Newcastle United 2-0 thanks to a pair of deflected Bernardo Silva strikes to reach a record sixth-consecutive semifinal.

By contrast, Championship Coventry were 2-1 down deep into stoppage time at Wolves before Ellis Simms and Haji Wright brought about a comeback for the ages.

On Sunday, March 17, Chelsea defeated Coventry’s Championship counterparts Leicester City 4-2 before the game of the round between Manchester United and Liverpool. The Red Devils won 4-3 after extra time in a sensational contest between two of English football’s fiercest rivals.
