The Labour Mass was celebrated in the church of Sainte Marie Madeleine in Pointe aux Sables. In his homily, Cardinal Maurice Piat spoke at length about the workers at the bottom of the ladder. “They are the ones most affected by the frightening increase in the cost of living,” said the head of the Catholic Church. The Bishop of Port-Louis mentioned those who live on the minimum wage and the self-employed. For them, these categories of workers are suffering from the rising cost of living, inflation, devaluation of the rupee as well as the slowdown of the economy. He also pointed out that foreign workers are also suffering in this country. Cardinal Piat deplored the effects of the current two- and even three-speed society.
