On Tuesday 15 August 2023, activist Bruneau Laurette announced that he was parting ways with three of his lawyers. These include Sanjeev Teeluckdharry, Akil Bissessur and Anoup Goodary from the group of lawyers calling themselves “the Avengers”. The activist will now be represented in the case by Shakeel Mohamed and Neelkanth Dulloo.
Bruneau Laurette has also announced that he is changing his attorney at the same time. Mr Vassen Atmarow will act act as his attorney as from now. The case was heard in the Supreme Court before the Acting Deputy Master and Registrar, Raj Seebaluck.This was in the context of the claim for damages lodged by the activist and his son, Jean Luca Ryan Laurette.
Father and son are claiming Rs 20 million in damages from Assistant Superintendent of Police Ashik Jagai and Woman Police Inspector Sheila Narainen.They complain that they were denied access to their lawyers while they were in custody. This was in the context of the investigation into the seizure of drugs with a street value of Rs 200 million. The case will now be called on 14 September 2023.
