The leader of the MMM rejects the report of the commission of inquiry into the sale of shares in Britam (Kenya). “This document is full of falsehoods, speculations and insinuations,” the MMM leader said a press conference of Alliance de l’Espoir Saturday morning.
Paul Bérenger recalled that the MMM had, from the outset, contested the choice of the president of the commission of inquiry and one of his assessors. “From the beginning, we said that it was a totally politicized commission. It is a false commission of enquiry that produced a false report,” he said, adding that events proved him right.
Paul Bérenger added that the content of the report aims to make people believe that an offer of Rs 4.3 billion was rejected in favor of another offer of Rs 2.3 billion. “They want to insinuate in the minds of the people that there has been an embezzlement of Rs 1.9 billion. However, one must ask who rejected the offer of a South African insurance company. In a letter addressed to the Ministry of Finance, the Kenyan Cabinet Secretary congratulates Mauritius for rejecting the South African offer and says that from now on, there can be negotiations, especially on the sale price. So it was the then Finance Minister, Vishnu Lutchmeenaraidoo and Financial Secretary, Dev Manraj who rejected the South African offer and not Roshi Bhadain,” he added.
Nando Bodha, who also spoke during that press conference, said it was clear that the commission of enquiry had “a political agenda“.
Roshi Bhadain, for his part, said that the commission could not, for one, show that he had embezzled or pocketed any commission. He also insisted that there was never a written offer of Rs 4.3 billion. He also announced that he will challenge the findings of the commission of enquiry. “I will exhaust all legal remedies so that the public can see the truth,” he said.
