On the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Britain imposed additional sanctions against it, including bans on imports of iron and steel products as well as exports of every weapon Russia has ever used in combat.
In an effort to cripple Moscow’s economy and reduce its capacity to wage war on its neighbor, Britain has frozen assets and targeted a number of Russian officials and businesses in recent months.
It said in a statement on Friday that it would target an additional 92 people and organizations, including friends of Russian President Vladimir Putin like Matthias Warnig, the head of Nord Stream 2.
Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said, “Today we are sanctioning the elites who run Putin’s key industries and committing to prohibit the export to Russia of every item Russia has been found using on the battlefield.”
Other executives who will be targeted include those at Russian banks, state-owned nuclear power business Rosatom, and other defense companies.
Additionally, 140 products, including those made of iron and steel in third-world nations, will not be allowed to be imported.
Zelenskyy and the G7 leaders are scheduled to meet to debate adding more sanctions against Russia.
“Trade sanctions are working. UK goods imports from Russia have fallen by 99%, since before the invasion, and goods exports to Russia have fallen by nearly 80%,” Business and Trade Secretary, Kemi Badenoch, said.
