The parliamentary and extra-parliamentary opposition both held a peaceful demonstration outside Government House last Friday. This was prior to the start of parliamentary business when debates were due to resume on the Financial Crimes Commission Bill. The Leader of the Opposition and other leaders of opposition parties told the press that day that the new law about to be passed represents a direct attack on democracy. The police believe that the demonstration organised by the opposition MPs was illegal. An investigation was launched following a complaint to Pope Hennessy police station.
As a reminder, all opposition parliamentarians demonstrated peacefully in front of Parliament last Friday. The objective: to protest against the way in which the Speaker directed parliamentary work but also the provisions of the Financial Crimes Commission Bill. Xavier-Luc Duval spoke of “an extremely sad and serious day for the country”. For him, it is important that the nation understands what was happening in Parliament. He announced an intensification of opposition actions against the Speaker next year.
