A tragic accident that claimed the life of Sudesh Kumar Halkhoree, a 54-year-old helper driver living in Petit Raffray, on Tuesday morning, April 11, on the main road in Bois Rouge, Pamplemousses. The victim’s truck skidded off the road and overturned in a gutter. The driver Ravin Jeebun, 51, of Panchvati, Rivière du Rempart was seriously injured. Sudesh Kumar Halkhoree is the 29th victim of road accidents since the beginning of this year.
The accident occurred at around 10am on Tuesday, April 11. At that very moment, the truck driven by Ravin Jeetun was travelling towards Port Louis. At one point he lost control of his vehicle after it skidded off the road and rolled over on its left side into a gutter.
The two occupants of the vehicle were seriously injured. When the alert was given, elements of the Pamplemousses police station went to the scene of the accident. They were joined shortly afterwards by men from the Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS). The latter were assisted by volunteers to get the two injured people out of the accident site before being taken to the northern hospital. A tree had to be felled at the accident site to facilitate the rescue operation.
Unfortunately, Sudesh Kumar Halkhoree succumbed to his injuries shortly after reaching the hospital. His body was subsequently taken to the mortuary of the Dr A.G. Jeetoo Hospital in Port Louis for an autopsy. The autopsy, carried out by Dr Prem Chamane, Principal Police Medical Officer, attributed the death to multiple injuries.
An investigation has been initiated at the Pamplemousses police station to shed light on the exact circumstances of this accident. The investigators are waiting for the driver to recover to get his version.
Rookmeen Deeljore, 64, who was hit by a car on the Royal Road in Union Park on the afternoon of Sunday 12 March, succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday morning 11 April. The victim, who was crossing the road, was hit head-on by a Toyota driven by a finance officer of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure. The 44-year-old was driving towards New France at the time of the accident. Rookmeen Deeljore was on life support at the Jawaharlall Nehru Hospital in Rose-Belle. The post-mortem performed on the afternoon of Tuesday 11 April by Dr Sudesh Kumar Gungadin, head of the police forensic department at the Victoria Hospital mortuary, Candos, attributed her death to sepsis.
