After three days on the run, Sidharth Nuckchadee, 24, who had fled from the Dr Bruno Cheong Hospital in Flacq where he was admitted, was recaptured by a team of police from the Eastern Division on the morning of Tuesday 18 July. Based on information provided by a police officer from the division’s Operations Room, the officers, led by Inspector Ramkissoon, went to the Route Royale de Pont Bon Dieu and apprehended the fugitive, who was walking along Luchmun Road, Belvedère. In the wake of the escape, Constable Maheshwar Pemsing, aged 42, of Brisée Verdière police station, who was supervising the prisoner in hospital, was arrested, and detained at Belle Mare police station. He had been admitted to hospital the same day after feeling unwell.
At around 10.10am on Tuesday 18 July, police officers from the Emergency Response Service and the Criminal Investigation Division in Brisée Verdière, supported by officers from the Divisional Crime Intelligence Unit, set off in their personal vehicles to patrol the Pont Bon Dieu area. Fugitive Sidharth Nuckchadee was seen walking along Luchmun Road, Belvedere. He was arrested and taken to the CID office for questioning before being placed in a cell at the Moka detention centre.
Sidharth Nuckchadee had been arrested by the Brisée Verdière CID on Friday 7 July in connection with a complaint of theft made on 3 July. He was brought before the Flacq court on Saturday 8 July. He was subsequently incarcerated at the Moka detention centre. On Saturday 15 July, the detainee, who was complaining of pain, was taken to Flacq hospital for treatment. He was admitted to the ward. It was in this institution that he escaped through a fanlight while using the toilet. He asked Constable Pemsing to remove the handcuffs from his feet, which were causing him pain.
Constable Pemsing, who left hospital on Wednesday 19 July, was released on parole. A decision will be taken against him once the police investigation in this case has been completed.
