Fourteen days after a road accident, Geeta Sunkur, 70 years old who was admitted to the intensive care unit of the northern hospital succumbed to her injuries on the morning of Thursday, January 12. The victim and her husband, Bagharatty Sunkur, were riding a motorcycle in Triolet when they were hit by a Yamaha motorcycle driven by an 18-year-old boy. It was on Thursday, December 29 last year. Thus the number of deaths on our roads for the year increases to 108.
It is around 8:20 am, this December 29, 2022 that this accident had occurred. The young motorcyclist living in Grand-Baie had not stopped at an intersection in Triolet. He collided head-on with a TVS motorcycle driven by 74-year-old Bagharatty Sunkur. The latter had his wife as a passenger. It is at the corner of Marcel Bouic street and Judivadoo lane, Solitude, Triolet that this accident had occurred.
This couple of septuagenarians who live in 7th Mile, Triolet had been injured. Geeta Sunkur was transported to the North Hospital in an Emergency Medical Service ambulance. The young motorcyclist was also taken to the hospital. The septuagenarian was taken to the Mediclinic of Triolet before being transferred to the North Hospital.
Both motorcyclists were given a breathalyzer test by Emergency Response Service officers. The test was negative. According to information available to the police, the young motorcyclist was riding on the Marcel Bouic road in Triolet. Arriving at the intersection of this road, he did not stop. It is at this precise moment that he had to collide with the motorcycle of this 74 years old man.
Geeta Sunkur succumbed to her injuries at 6 a.m. on Thursday 12 January. An autopsy was performed on the body at about 10:30 a.m. the same day. The autopsy was performed by Dr. Prem Chamane, Principal Police Medical Officer at the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis and attributed his death to lobar pneumonia, following the road accident.
