We’ve come a long way in 100 years as a society, for our environment, as a race of people, for animals, in understanding values, rights and wrongs to the betterment of all these things. We’re getting there, but we still have a way to go towards full equality the world over.
As humans, we have to seek to try and accept equality – between black & white, straight & guy and male & female (and non-binary). We are at a junction of the word spinning around us, where we must decide to be on the right side of history. There’s only one answer.
Christened ‘Ladies Camp’, Dunia Camp is the only entirely female run safari camp in Tanzania (and in East Africa) and this is mainly due to cultural reasons. In Tanzania, the legally minimum marriage of girls is 14 with parental consent. Therefore, some families still priorities sending off their sons to school and marrying off daughters young in order to get dowry.
The camp helps to promote female empowerment through averting early marriages. Lailatu Wilfred Kivuyo, 26-year-old, is one of only the three female guides in the Serengeti. She explained, “I might have been a mother of five in the village right now, which was not the dream for me.” She is already married but has no kids yet. She also adds, “I would like to inspire more women to be guides. I like to meet new people because the more you meet the more you learn. I like sharing my traditions and I like being out cause I enjoy learning about animal behaviour.”
Feminism isn’t about making women stronger. Women are already strong, it’s about changing the way the world perceives that strength.” ~ G.D. Anderson
