The International Transport Worker’s Federation (ITF) Seafarers is calling for the “immediate release” and repatriation of the MV Wakashio crew. According to David Heindel, Chairperson of the Seafarers Section of the ITF; “This week also marks one year since the Mauritian authorities have held members of the crew and prevented them from leaving the Republic, most have been effectively detained without charge”.
Last week, the ITF sent a letter to the President of the Republic, H.E Prithvirajsing Roopun to seek his support. The Federation shared its “deep concerns” over the fate of the MV Wakashio crew. Although criminal proceedings may be justified, the letter says, fundamental human rights such as right to justice and fair treatment must be respected.
The Seafarers Section of the ITF says through a blog article on its website that it is monitoring and fighting back the criminalization of seafarers across the globe. It has observed that very often Government officials detain entire crews without charge to bolster their negotiating positions over damages.
“Seafarers are often seen as bargaining chips in efforts to hold shipowners accountable for shipping accidents caused by issues such as lack of maintenance. This is especially the case when states find it difficult to locate and prosecute irresponsible ship owners who too often hide behind the Flag of Convenience System”, claims David Heindel.
A claim that will have reputational repercussions for Mauritius as this article has been reshared by specialized publications such as The Maritime Post.
