On Thursday, the Supreme Court, through Justices Rita Teelock and Mohana Naidoo, upheld the Rose Hill court’s decision to grant bail to Ibrahim Sorefan. The two judges did not change the bail conditions. They simply added a few more. Thus, the 24-year-old suspect will have to pay a bail of Rs 35,000 and sign an acknowledgement of Rs 250,000. He must also report three times a week to the police station nearest to his home. He should notify the police of any threat or concern for his safety. He must also surrender his passport to immigration and under no circumstances approach or contact anyone in connection with the case. The two judges also ordered that Ibrahim Sorefan be provided with a GPS phone to allow the police to better track his movements. Ibrahim Abdool Jeelani Sorefan was arrested on 22 June 2022. He is facing eight provisional charges of sexual abuse of deaf and dumb minors. He was granted bail by the Rose-Hill district Court. But the Office of the DPP appealed against that decision.
