The Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Jugnauth, yesterday, Tuesday 30 August 2022, inaugurated a new fire station at Mon Plaisir in the centre of Rodrigues Island.
This new development will enable the island’s inhabitants to always have access to an emergency service. The Prime Minister said that there is nothing more important than the safety of the people and that the emergency services play an essential role in everyday life.
“We have to face several challenges together with the regional administration. I remain committed to ensuring sustainable development for Rodrigues,” he said. “We must not forget factors beyond our control such as climate change and its effects.
The Prime Minister also congratulated 24 new Rodriguan firefighters who are taking up duty today, including two young Rodriguan women. The PM was pleased that women are also interested in this difficult profession. It should be noted that two young Rodriguan men have joined the Rodrigues Fire Service.
The Prime Minister also spoke of the civic responsibility of the inhabitants not to hinder the work of the rescue workers. He also asked the firemen to participate in the education of the Rodriguan people on the good habits to adopt in dangerous situations.
Rodrigues now has a second fire station after the one at Camp du Roi.
The personnel of the new fire station will also be called upon to support the firemen assigned to the Plaine Corail airport.
The Prime Minister reiterated his determination to bring development to every nook and corner of the Republic.
The Prime Minister also officially commissioned a brand-new fire engine.
During this last function of the Prime Minister’s official visit, he expressed his appreciation to the regional administration and the people of Rodrigues for the warm welcome he received during his stay.
In conclusion, the Prime Minister said that the Republic is facing a difficult economic situation with Covid-19, the war in Ukraine, record inflation worldwide. He called for working together to meet the challenges.
