Must Read

Actively sought since Thursday, December 16, 2021 for the importation of 56.1 kilos of cannabis from Reunion Island, David Kinsley Chicot, the 30-year-old skipper and a resident of Avenue Gandhi, Trèfles, Rose-Hill, was apprehended this Thursday, February 11. His arrest was made in the same locality by men of the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) of the Northern Division. The drugs, worth Rs 56 million, were seized after a boat was chased in the lagoon of Grand-Baie by elements of the National Coast Guard (NCG). The four occupants of the boat had managed to escape.

It is on the basis of certain information and after two days of surveillance that an operation was mounted in Trèfles, Rose-Hill by the men of the assistant superintendent of police, Rajendranath Jhurry of the ADSU of the North Division around 9:30 am this Thursday, February 11. Kingsley Chicot is the fourth suspect to be arrested in this drug importation case.

A lot of hard work on the ground had led to the arrest of three of the four suspects on Friday, December 24. They are Abu Bakar Siddic Seethamah, alias Pepec, a 44-year-old cook, Keetanandsing Ramchurn, also known as Tipti, a 29-year-old fisherman, and Mohamed Yousouf Seeruttun, alias Parwez, a 37-year-old skipper.  These suspects live in Grand Bay.

It was during an NCG patrol at sea that a speed boat with four crew members, which was entering the Grand Bay channel, was intercepted. Caught in pursuit, the boat had to change its trajectory and head for the shore. The four people on board had to abandon the boat to flee. A large cargo of cannabis, 56.1 kilos, was seized. The value of this drug is Rs 56 million.

It is the police officers of the ADSU of Grand-Bay led by the chief inspector Rohomutally, the inspector Soyfoo and the constable Gungaram who had proceeded to the arrest of three first suspects. These suspects are known in the ADSU community.  This drug seizure has once again confirmed the existence of a Reunion/Mauritius axis in the importation of drugs.

After a first night in a cell, Kinsley Chicot was brought before the Bail and Remand Court (BRC) in Port-Louis this Saturday morning, February 12. He is facing a provisional charge of drug importation. This suspect has already been identified by his three other travel companions during the day on Friday.
