37 candidates have completed the procedures this Saturday, January 22, for the regional elections scheduled for February 13. The MR and the OPR presented candidates in the six regions while the Rodrigues Alliance and the Liberation Alliance will be presented in three regions each. According to statements by Irfan Rahman, the electoral commissioner, the gender quota has been respected by all parties and alliances.
It should be noted that there was a challenge to Johnson Roussety’s candidacy in region 5, but it was not upheld by the returning officer. There was only one independent candidate in the person of Sophia Gaspard from Region 5.
The filing of candidacies by the various political parties and alliances took place in a calm atmosphere on all fronts. The OPR began first at the voting center of Mont Lubin and in the company of activists, godfather, godmother and candidates, they have crisscrossed all the centers of application including Mont Lubin, Grande Montagne, Lataniers, Le Chou, Marechal and the Farm.
Candidates have until Tuesday, February 25, at 3 p.m., to withdraw their candidacy. In addition, parties and alliances must file their lists for the proportional elections on Thursday, February 27 between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Note that the MR, the Liberation alliance and the OPR have all gone on parade. All the candidates are confident for this election and there were no withdrawals.
