Hollywood witnessed a flurry of weddings as the long anticipated marriages of several celebrity couples took place in a year that saw lockdowns end completely. We take a look at some of the biggest as the year comes to a conclusion.
1. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez
It was one of the most anticipated weddings when celebrities Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez announced their engagement 20 years ago; their wedding eventually occurred in 2002. However, the two broke up in 2004 and started new relationships with other individuals, only to reconcile in 2022. The couple said their “I dos” a second time at a grandiose ceremony held at Affleck’s Hampton Island Preserve estate in Georgia after exchanging vows at a Las Vegas wedding chapel on July 16.
2. Britney Spears and Sam Asghari
Pop icon Britney Spears wed actor and fitness model Sam Asghari, with whom she had been seeing since 2016, seven months after the protracted conservatorship ended. The ceremony was held on June 9 at the couple’s Los Angeles home in Thousand Oaks. All I want is my life back. The wedding also symbolised Spears’ freedom since a year earlier, when fighting her conservatorship, she had told a probate judge, “I want to be able to be married and have a child.”
3. Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker
In a Dolce & Gabbana-themed wedding, Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker said “I do” on May 22 in Portofino, Italy. According to Kardashian, who described it with the proverb “Practice makes perfect,” it was their third celebration of the year. On April 4, the pair wed informally at the One Love Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas. The two also tried to get married again, this time in Santa Barbara, California, with a marriage licence in hand, a few days before their Italian wedding.
4. Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons
At a posh resort close to Ocho Rios, Jamaica, actress Kirsten Dunst married her longtime partner Jesse Plemons in a private ceremony. The two began dating in 2016 after first meeting while working together on the FX series Fargo. They get engaged in January 2017 and brought their son Ennis into the world in 2018. The 40-year-old actor gave birth to their second son, James Robert, last year.
5. Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz
On April 9, Brooklyn Beckham and actor Nicola Peltz were married in a Jewish ceremony. Following the pre-party, where the couple was spotted smiling and sharing secret kisses, they were married at Peltz’s parents’ house in Palm Beach, Florida. Beckham, the oldest child of designer and Spice Girl Victoria Beckham and former soccer star David Beckham, confirmed the couple’s engagement in July 2020.
6. Lindsay Lohan and Bader Shammas
Actress Lindsay Lohan married billionaire Bader Shammas in a covert ceremony after they announced their engagement in November 2021. Only when the Mean Girls actress posted a picture of herself and Bader together on Instagram on July 2 and referred to Shammas as her “husband” did the public learn about the marriage. “I am the world’s luckiest woman. Not because I’m in need of a man, but because he discovered me and understood my desire to find grace and happiness simultaneously. The fact that this is my husband astounds me. My entire being, my life,” she stated.
7. Rita Ora and Taika Waititi
Rita Ora, a British singer, and Taika Waititi, a filmmaker, secretly wed on August 8 in London. The couple reportedly made “almost simultaneous” marriage proposals to one another a month before they began dating in May 2021. In front of their closest friends and family, they exchanged vows. The fact that Ora published a photo of the two together on Valentine’s Day and noted that it was shot four years prior revealed their long-standing friendship.
8. Taylor Lautner and Taylor Dome
On November 11, exactly one year after getting engaged, Twilight series star Taylor Lautner wed longtime partner Taylor Dome. The couple’s dream wedding in California, at Epoch Estate Winery north of Paso Robles, was conceptualised and planned by Josiah Carr and Justin McGregor of Samkoma. They uploaded photos to Instagram a few days after their wedding with the message “Mr. and Mrs. Taylor Lautner.”
9. James Gunn and Jennifer Holland
In a private ceremony in front of the magnificent Aspen, Colorado, setting, director James Gunn wed actor Jennifer Holland. After the wedding, Gunn shared pictures from the event, noting that there had also been a Marvel vs. DC softball game. “After more than 7 years of dating, I wed my soul mate, @jenniferlholland. What a fantastic day it was, he said, “surrounded by the most amazing family and friends in the world. Their relationship began when James wrote and directed the film Peacemaker, in which Holland starred.
10. Jay Ellis and Nina Senicar
Five years after their initial encounter in a Los Angeles bar in 2015, actor Jay Ellis and actress and model Nina Senicar became husband and wife. In Italy’s Tuscany, they were married in a beautiful garden. Tony Mancilla, the creative director and a mutual friend of the couple, played cupid and later conducted their wedding. Nora Grace, their two-year-old daughter, was the flower girl during the wedding. The pandemic postponed the couple’s wedding, which they had been preparing for since 2019.
